Ni hao Chinese food!
My favourite cuisine. I can almost taste crispy duck and sticky hoi sin sauce oozing out of a soft floury pancake right now. And it’s only 8:44am.
I am happy to admit I am a foodie, I suffer from foodporn. I not only constantly think of what I am going to have for my next meal, I am simultaneously checking my mailbox for the latest delivery flyers and scouring The Nudge or Design My Night for new restaurants. A full on diet is never gonna happen for me because I just love food too much!
One of the things I miss about living in Singapore is nipping to my local food court to grab a super cheap, hearty dish of freshly cooked chicken, beef, vegetables and rice (and of course the odd cheeky Tiger beer!), so when I moved to London, understanding what food establishments were around me was pretty key to securing my final destination. And what a gem of an area I settled in. You see, tucked away amidst the charm of Greenwich, a few steps away from the Cutty Sark is a beautiful, lip smacking wallet friendly Chinese, called Tai Won Mein.
You know that place you crave when you want to just dive in to a relaxed atmosphere, chope a seat (which means to reserve a seat in Singapore) and devour a huge plate of food with no washing up? This is precisely that place. It’s a simple establishment with no airs or graces, it’s cash only and as quickly as you order the food, it arrives.
This is by no means a fine dining restaurant, it is informal, hugely popular and in a nutshell prides itself on awesome food, low prices, a variety of drinks (including beer and wines) fast service and hugely generous portion sizes.
The menu is huge, it always takes me a while to come to a decision as quite frankly I want to hand them the entire thing and say, “I’ll just take it all thanks!” But one important tip, if you are like me and are a stickler for having meals in a certain order i.e. starters followed by mains then make sure you order only the starters first. You can add the mains when you have finished, otherwise a sheer mass of food will arrive at once! I go a bit nuts when starters and mains arrive together, I feel pressured to eat it all at once and some of the dishes go cold.
The servings average around £5-6 and I am talking one huge plate, pimped! So your bill at the end works out to be pretty affordable and you leave with an extremely contented yet dozed look across your face. Heaven.
This is my go-to restaurant when I just want tasty, quick and reasonably priced food, whether it be to dine in or to grab a takeaway to accompany my movie night on the sofa or quite frankly if I just feel like I need a hug. It’s comforting food.
A few tips before going:
It’s cash only so make sure you have plenty
The dishes are enormous so maybe think of sharing
If you do over order, you can take it home with you, they charge 50p per container (at the time of press)
I have definitely found my favourite restaurant in Greenwich, and in actual fact it might even be in London…so far.
The only request I have of this restaurant (because otherwise you really can’t fault it), is I wish the staff would smile more! This clearly hasn’t put me off but it would just be nice to see.
So hey you, yes you..I want to thank you for reading my post. Whether you’ve stuck around since the beginning of my journey or whether you’re new to my blog, thank you for reading and supporting. I genuinely appreciate it.
