You know what…
Everyone, at some point in their lives suffers from confidence-itis.
The best part about this though is that if you do things right, no-one will ever know. Cool right? So bear with me…imagine you are walking through a busy high street, amongst hundreds of other shoppers. You feel like you are the only one at that time feeling uneasy right? Everyone seems to have a purpose, they are all focused on where they are going, they look nice, they are standing tall. Do you know how many other people walking past us may be thinking the exact same thing? Probably heaps! It’s all about perception.
It could be a lack of confidence in the office or about putting on a bikini, you never know when that little bugger is going to creep in and mess with your mind. Even sometimes those who appear to be super confident, just aren’t. I have a friend who always and I mean always oozes assurance, she has this courageous resoluteness that I am extremely jealous of. We spoke of this recently (I wanted to know her secret in all honesty) but I was surprised by her reply…“Darling, I just fake it until I make it!”
Say what? That fearlessness is not even real, whoah teach me right now! What I realised was that whatever is going on in our heads, it is just exactly that, in our heads. No-one else can see or hear those thoughts. We could be shaking in our boots yet walk with our heads held high into a room and all people see is confidence. Over a few glasses of bubbles, my friend and I came up with a few other ways we can fake it so that at a moments notice when those confidence stealers creep in, we have a few things up our sleeves.
CONCENTRATE ON YOUR GOOD BITS
Take the bikini example earlier, some of us dread the mere thought of putting one on for fear of scaring off half the human population. I know my lower body isn’t a Victoria Secret replicate but I know my top half beats theirs hands down! We all have areas about our body we are less pleased with, so concentrate on those that we are pleased with.
STAND OR SIT UP STRAIGHT
We noticed this change in the bar, we were both slouching and just relaxing but then the minute we started brainstorming our fake it techniques, we found we were both sat up straight and feeling awesome! One quick tip for immediate confidence, strike a pose! Stand up with your hands on your hips, it gives a perception that you are totally in control and apparently this ‘power pose’ is known to increase positive hormones in your body. So go ahead, try it!
I can’t emphasise this one enough because you don’t see confident people sat chewing their nails or frowning right? Smiling also when you don’t feel like it really does make you feel better, it gives the impression you are kind, empowered, enthusiastic or even all three! Just be genuine or you may come across as a weirdo!
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN YOU
Knowing that you don’t have a vulture in the room, desperate to get at you is quite reassuring. Having people around you who have faith in and have respect for you are only going to lift you up higher. When you feel you can’t do something, they remind you of what you have achieved already and that when you did those things at first, when you didn’t think you would have smashed them…well look at you now!
