The Power Of A Smile

#MONSLAY – Let’s do this!

Usually, the Monday blues try their best to pull my positive pants down and steal them for at least 24 hours. But this weekend I self-promised to enjoy every single moment, literally. Not because I wanted to actively be more mindful but because I am always asking myself where the hell those two days have gone. I wanted to greet Monday with welcome arms and wear my positive pants with pride.

What I realised through doing this was that I smiled more, and yes to myself a lot of the time. Waking early knowing I could actually go back to sleep if I wanted to only made me get up and not waste the day and knowing I didn’t have to gulp down my first cuppa of the day and rush out the door by 7:15am made me smile as though I had endless options. I could choose whichever one I wanted with no time pressures. I realised I was smiling again.

So that joyous, kind moment, why should it be just one moment, why can’t it last all day?  That was precisely my plan, to experience that feeling…all day.

Here’s how:

SATURDAY

A day spent in Chelsea, one of London’s most affluent and fashionable neighbourhoods. Main attractions being boutique shops, a healthy brunch, and great company.

Starting with brunch at Tom’s Kitchen kicking off the day with a catch-up full of laughter, talking through aspirations, plans, and ideas.

Rounding up the day with retail therapy in some of my most adored stores and a pamper sesh in the nail salon now what’s not to smile about?

Smiling at someone, even yourself makes you feel instantly happy, it banishes negativity. Experiences are much more enjoyable and it’s funny how one small smile to an apparently grumpy looking person on the tube can completely transform their facial expressions.

SUNDAY

The best lie in and a Skype chat with one of my dearest pals in Singapore started Sunday off with a bang! God, I miss living there. I still feel that oomph feeling in my stomach when I think of it, I would move back there in a heartbeat.

Finishing the day with a hair appointment, making banana pancakes and blogging has been a perfect end to a lovely weekend.

I feel satisfied, I have maximised those two days doing exactly what I love and appreciating not only each moment but enjoying the company and understanding the power of a smile.

I am sure there are people out there thinking how can you just smile randomly? Especially if you have nothing to smile about. But try practicing it. Trust me. You probably even smile without realising. It could be receiving a lovely text, something as simple as that can allow that grin to appear. But if you are finding it difficult, try starting out by smiling at small things. Your brain registers how you feel when you do this and the positivity sticks around.

What exactly are the benefits of smiling?

IT BOOSTS YOUR PRODUCTIVITY

Happy people are much more fun to be around and people wearing a smile are much more approachable. Improved working relationships and creativity through less stress is an all-around winner.

IT IMPROVES YOUR MOOD

How many people do you know who is smiling who is super grumpy? I rest my case.

IT ATTRACTS GOOD ENERGY

Smiling breeds positivity. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne teaches us that what you give out you attract, so positive happy people are like magnets, attracting like-minded people. Smiling helps soften anyone suffering from a crabby mood and helps dispel negativity.

IT CAN PUT OTHERS AT EASE

Have you ever been in a situation where you feel uneasy, worried or generally uncomfortable and then someone smiles at you, can you remember how that made you feel? It’s a shoulder drop moment for me. Sometimes a smile can give comfort and alleviate pressure. Go ahead, try it.

SMILES ARE FREE

There is no monetary value attached to a smile, it doesn’t cost a penny. It can really transform someone’s day, why not be that person who can do this? None of us know what anyone else is thinking, or what situation they are in but one small smile can encourage optimism and hope.

And finally…LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO!

So here I am ready to slay Monday with a fulfilled weekend in my back pocket armed with a smile.

    The idea of choosing how you spend your weekend is so empowering. Too many times I’ve felt the weekend slipped away by Monday Morning, and I wonder where the time went. Being mindful of every precious moment seems like it really allowed you to enjoy everything. What a nice thought. Also, all of the food you ate looks AMAZING. I’m about to hop on a flight to Chelsea just to see what Tom’s Kitchen is all about. Geez.

      Haha you should go and let me know what you order!! Being mindful Of the entire weekend helped me so much it didn’t feel like it had gone by with the blink of an eye I felt like I had a really long lovely weekend!!!
