How To Have More Self-Respect

Before I begin, let’s clarify something.

Self-respect is not about conceit nor does it make you self-centered. What it is, is a healthy respect for yourself and others which generates self-worth and establishes a statement that you are worthy of receiving love as well as giving it.

Self-respect, however, isn’t that easy to come by for all of us but it’s determined by our actions.

Again, that isn’t easy either if you really want to be true to yourself, to experience inner joy and live a fulfilled life. But taking the first steps is a start to a more fruitful journey ahead.

DETERMINE YOUR VALUES

What are the things which you stand for? Personal values are what’s important to you in the way you live and work. They help you determine whether you are living the life you want to. Try making a list of things which are important to you, they can range from calmness, genuineness and kindness to something else which may be your areas of paramount importance. Unsure of what they are for you? Here is a list of values to help get the creative juices flowing.

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT IN LIFE

What are your goals and dreams? What do you want to achieve? Noting them down and thinking about how you are going to get there, what kind of actions need to be taken can help give you a referral point to keep you on track of what you want in life. It’s important to remember that no one else is living your life but you and you only get one of them, make the most of it.

DON’T ALLOW PEOPLE TO TREAT YOU DISRESPECTFULLY

This is easy to say as you can’t control other people’s behaviour but you can control how you react to it and whether you spend time in their company again. My motto is that you should treat others the way you yourself would like to be treated. It is important to remember that you deserve to be treated with respect and you have a choice, to avoid allowing anyone to treat you disrespectfully in the future.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE

When you nourish your mind with like-minded people not only are you happier, you are more forward-looking, more creative and productive. You find yourself doing things which excite you, creating positive experiences. When you are feeling good you experience good emotions, gratitude and joy. None of these exist when you surround yourself with negative people. You only experience bad emotions such as anger, disappointment and sadness. It’s not worth it, life is too short, surround yourself with the right people and watch your life change.

And the most important thing in all of this, my biggest piece of advice….remember, you’re a rock star!
