I have been in London nearly a week.
I still can’t believe I am not here on vacation, I won’t be returning to the tropics in a week. I have read so many horror blogs on how difficult it is to return to your home country after being an expat but I have to say that so far it isn’t all that bad. I am not finding it as difficult as I anticipated. I also still feel like an expat as I have been away for so long and I have never lived in London so bring on the exploring.
Don’t get me wrong, I miss so many things about Singapore including my friends, but we are in contact just as much as if I was still there so I don’t feel so far away after all.
The weather has also helped. I thought I was going to be plunged into the depths of baltic air, wind-burned faces and grey miserable dark days, but someone must be looking down on me because I have arrived in the middle of a heatwave! Flip-flops and Raybans are still a requirement…happy days!
As you will know from my previous posts, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore was my haven. I love being in designer nirvana.
One of my favourite designers is Victoria Beckham. Not only do I respect and savour the simplicity, elegance and the way her pieces fall, but I love that she designs to make women feel empowered. To make them feel assured and the confidence to be the best version of themselves. I read too many articles nowadays where the gender pay gap or the gender imbalance in the industry still exists and can affect womens’ confidence.
I was lucky enough to attend Victoria closing Singapore Fashion Week last year, a pretty awesome moment for me.
Not only would another visit to her flagship store on Dover Street have been impending, it was brought forward by an invite to celebrate the launch of her limited edition, Victoria Beckham Estee Lauder makeup collection. Containing my excitement for this was pretty tough I have to say.
Approaching the minimalistic store I always get excited, I fumble at the car door desperate to get out. Then….elegance consumes me. I can never decide when I arrive whether it feels like a store or an art gallery. The pieces are positioned gracefully but really are displayed like pieces of art. This combined with majestic art work and a welcoming polished stone staircase is luxury in abundance.
Security are welcoming and friendly then I am greeted by Henry.
Henry knows about all the beautifully displayed pieces hung from Victoria’s signature gold chains, we chat through items worn by her and when. He makes me feel like a celebrity. I am offered champagne and then the time has come, to have my makeover and experience the highly anticipated collection!
Amy from Estee Lauder approaches with a huge smile and you can tell she loves her job. She is passionate explaining the products, beginning with the stand out luxurious design. Each compact exterior is in embossed black leather with a signature gold surround casing. It’s refined and grand.
We discuss which look I would like to wear. There are four looks centered around her favourite cities:
I tend to wear natural makeup in the day but I like dramatic eyes for the evening. I am also a red lipstick addict but I can never seem to find the right colour. So we go for the signature Victoria look, natural with smokey eyes and nude lips. I did try the Chilean Sunset lipstick and I have to say, due to its orangey tone, it would suit most skin tones.
What impressed me the most was how light yet opulent the products felt on my skin. Victoria has developed the collection by thinking what is it that she would want in her makeup bag, what is easy to apply and how can your daytime look easily be transformed into an evening look. The 15 piece collection already makes me feel confident, Amy teaches me how to apply the makeup and explains some of the history behind the creation of the products. In particular, many years ago Victoria used an Estee Lauder bronzer/highlighter which they discontinued and which she then hunted high and low on Ebay for second hand. So in her collaboration with Estee Lauder, she asked to bring this product back, and here it is in all its glory…
The whole experience thanks to both Amy and Henry was awesome and personalised. I’m looking forward to returning, knowing I can discuss collections with Henry, have an honest opinion about what suits me and what doesn’t and walk out the store with a smile on my face.
I am sure that my bank account is pulling the opposite expression following my purchases…whoops! In my defence, the makeup is a limited edition collection!
