My Motto: Make the most out of life.
Don’t get me wrong it isn’t always easy. Life can drop its bombs, we have highs, lows and both good times and bad. It’s about enjoying the lives we have because we only have one of them!
I’m always looking to improve myself, to learn and absorb more, to be a better version of myself in whatever shape or form that may be. One of the ways I like to do this is to immerse myself in TED Talks.
TED is a non-profit organisation which is dedicated in its basic form, to spreading ideas and generating conversation. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. There are thousands of talks ranging from science to business to global issues. Pretty much anything you want to know more about can be found on the TED.com website.
Life is a gift. Wake up every day and realise that
Neil begins by talking about his upbringing and things which have happened in his life which sadly include the passing of a very dear friend and his wife announcing she no longer loved him. Through this tough time, he decided to focus on the positives and one night started a website called 1000AwesomeThings, the aim was just to remind himself of all the small things in life which he was grateful for. The website soon took off to an audience of millions and receiving awards.
This was all based upon the 3 A’s which are:
Things happen to us, as I mentioned earlier we have highs, lows, and experience both good and bad things. Neil’s message is clear, we have two choices. We can allow whatever has happened to consume us or we can in his words, “Grieve and face the future with newly sober eyes.” Moving forward no matter how stuck or sad we feel is always the better option.
Neil talks about young kids seeing the world for the first time like seeing a flower in the grass for the first time and experiencing that moment where they stand for a moment looking at it. His message again is clear, embrace your inner three-year-old and enjoy the experience.
This is about being you and being happy with that. Feeling fulfilled and satisfied by doing the things you enjoy, not what others want you to enjoy.
These 3 A’s definitely hit home for me as a great reminder of how awesome life can be if we choose the right attitude and choose to actually live the life we have. There really are so many things to be happy about and I think the point towards the end of his talk is the one that frightened me the most…
We are the only species who are capable of experiencing everything we have in the world, for example, the comforting smell of coffee or having books to read (sometimes the simplest of things!) BUT and this is the scariest point, we only have 100 years to enjoy it! I know, just 100 years! We will never be as young as we are right now and everyone we know, our friends, colleagues, and family will no longer be here in 100 years. It’s time to make the most of the tiny moments, the small experiences and living a life which is truly awesome.
If you have a spare 17 minutes I highly recommend sticking in the earphones and listening to the 3 A’s Of Awesome.
What TED Talks have you watched which have inspired you? I would love to hear about them!
