It’s no secret that I love books.

There’s something about turning actual pages, that distinct smell of paper (especially library books they have such an old smell), the ability to completely disappear for hours and the satisfaction of finishing a whole book to proudly display on a shelf which fills me with immense satisfaction and happiness. I read to learn and to relax. Not only am I a history geek, I read anything from autobiographies to mindfulness lifestyle, the odd romance, and a damn good thriller. That’s it. Vamoose. I’ve gone. I am no longer in the present moment, I am an extra in the book stood amongst everyone as the story unfolds around me.

If I had the chance to get around in my day to day life reading a book I would. But I don’t fancy walking into a lamppost or listening to people huffing behind me as I walk at snail pace. So ah ha! Problem solved! I could listen to a book on my morning commute, as I go shopping or when I’m running. Why haven’t I thought of this before? I will keep my beloved paperbacks for when I am home or on holiday, where that relaxation time is in abundance.

But not only does it save your hands from having to hold a book (I know first world problems), I have found heaps of benefits as to why I think I have a slight addiction!

THEY SAVE MY EYES

No more strain on reading whether it be an actual book or using a Kindle. Open the app, select your book, press play and close your eyes. Simple. Well unless you’re out walking, running or on your morning commute. Please don’t close your eyes then.

I HAVE AN ELEVATED IMAGINATION

Not that I really need any help in having an overactive imagination but I find by listening to audiobooks I visualise more. Adjectives and verbs are highlighted, I can create my own images.

I CAN SPEND LONGER IN THE BATH

Any excuse right? Time spent with frothy bubbles and scented candles is precious so why rush? A good chapter or two in the bath is a sublime way to relax.

I DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING

I know, back to first world problems and all, but I don’t even have to turn a page! I press play and off we go!

BUT I CAN ALSO MULTI-TASK!

Sticking in the headphones and doing some household jobs can make the chore much more enjoyable. I have been hoovering and polishing without realising I was doing it! No more mundane jobs for me.

TIME GOES QUICKLY

Not that I want to rush any part of my life but when I am listening to an audiobook my commute to work seems to be over in a flash. I want to hear more. I feel like I have been done out of the next chapter! Just make sure that you aren’t so immersed that you miss your train stop or you take the wrong turning off the motorway!

I CAN’T SPEED READ

I have a habit of skim reading. Not a great habit to have but I can read books at full pelt sometimes. It’s nice to not be in control of the pace and to listen to the pronunciation, hear the syllables and the tones in which the characters are speaking. Knowing I can’t rush is a delightful feeling.

I use Kindle Unlimited to source my audiobooks, you can keep up to 10 titles at a time and all you have to do is return one if you want another. Simples. It’s £7.99 a month but if you read as much as I do it’s worth it. You can always try the 30-day free trial and see what you think.

Do you have a love for reading or listening to audiobooks? I would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I love listening to podcasts for the exact same reason! I’d honestly listen to more audiobooks, but they cost money, whereas podcasts are free! 🙂
But yes, I love that I can listen to them while doing other mindless tasks like driving to work, running, or sorting papers. So good!
Another great thing about podcasts is that I never run out of things to listen to! There’s a wealth of information out there on more topics than the imagination can dream up.

    • Ooh what podcasts do you listen to? I’m always on the lookout for new ones! I love learning about new stuff so podcasts are fabulous for that!

      • Oh absolutely! So I love the classics like Radiolab and This American Life, but some of my other favorites are:
        Modern Love
        Business Boutique
        Fat Mascara
        Death, Sex & Money
        Reply All
        The Art of Charm
        The Longest Shortest Time

Sorry, I know that’s a TON, but I just get carried away when I start listing my favorites! Do you have any recommendations?

Please share your thoughts...
