How often do you wonder where the hell that week went?
Before we know it, it’s Monday already…all over again!
Weeks are becoming more chaotic, the to-do list grows, all of a sudden its lunchtime, then time to leave work and whoah there the alarm clock is singing and dancing to signify the dawn of a new day. Whilst mindfulness is trending as a key focal point for many of us, aiding us to pause, slow down and savour the moment, it also spawns an awesome opportunity. One to actually enjoy our time, a juncture where we can have the freedom to treat ourselves, no matter what it is. And we can do this, every day. If we wish.
A few weeks back one of my colleagues said, “Do you know you should treat yourself to something, every day.” He went on to explain. Not necessarily anything of monetary value, but something small, and the most important bit make it special. I immediately said, “Ok like a bath?” He said, “Sure, but not just a normal bath. Use luxurious bubbles, light candles, have a glass of wine and listen to some music.” Basically, his point was anything which makes you feel special. A treat.
The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others
It’s becoming more acceptable to look after ourselves, to take time out without being wracked with guilt. It’s almost acknowledged, approved of, and something we are willing to stand up for.
Treats mean different things to different people. For me, it’s something I want to do for myself because I can, because I feel like I deserve it (and why not?!). It makes me feel special and the more love I can give myself the more I can give to others. It prevents a burnout and quite frankly, that’s a winner all around. There is no definitive list of treats, as they mean different things to different people, BuzzFeed recently asked members of its community how they treat themselves after a bad day, you can read their ideas here. But you don’t need to wait for it to be a bad day, you can treat yourself every single day with something big or small. It doesn’t matter as long as it makes you happy!
Some of my favourite ways to treat myself this week have made a real difference to how I feel:
BATH, EPSOM SALTS, AND PODCAST
A few handfuls of Epsom Salts with a few drops of lavender initiated a harmonious, tranquil space to sink into a hot bath surrounded by scented candles and a great podcast. I am currently listening to Stuff You Should Know, the history of champagne was my topic of the day. I didn’t even wait for it to be evening, it was a late morning bubble bath which almost felt impish but luxurious.
BEING A DOMESTIC GODDESS
Ok, I do have an excuse here, I have joined Weight Watchers recently (which has been a success so far!) and it has encouraged me to channel my inner Nigella in producing some new dishes. I have made a huge effort because not only do I want to prevent myself from binging into any fast food slump, I actually enjoy cooking and creating something enjoyable to eat. Part of the challenge has been making sure I can show people that being on a healthy eating plan doesn’t involve eating cardboard or even worse, dust.
I have made a commitment to myself to learn another language, I have enrolled in a course but I have given myself a head start thanks to Babbel. Time on the sofa, headphones firmly planted in my ears and Andiamo! (Let’s Go!).
I am usually listening to audiobooks on my commute but there is something about that evening shutdown process. I’m talking candles, dimmed lights, fresh bedding, a soothing drink and a good book. There’s something about the smell of the pages in a book, do you agree? Please don’t keep me hanging! The worst part about reading in bed is the constant bashing my nose gets as I keep dropping the book whilst falling asleep! I’m currently reading the infamous Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff, a highly recommended easy read.
ANYTHING WORTH 2 POINTS!
All of my Weight Watcher treats I discovered are actually 2 points! I have many options including Jelly Tots, Jaffa Cakes, French Fries and Gin & Slimline Tonic. So whilst I may be eating much healthier, I still sometimes need something from my treats list. Happy days!
I hope I’ve inspired you to start treating yourself every day, I have certainly enjoyed sharing my treats with you.
What ways do you treat yourself? I would love to hear about them!
So hey you, yes you…I want to thank you for reading my post. Whether you’ve stuck around since the beginning of my journey or whether you’re new to my blog, thank you for reading and supporting. I genuinely appreciate it.
