Before we get started, what do I mean by values?
They are the things in which you stand for. The things which are important in the way you live and work. They help determine whether you are living the life you want to. When your behaviours and actions match your values life is pretty damn good, you’re happy and on course with your plans. But when they are compromised in any way life can be downright miserable.
Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values
Recently I have been concentrating on my personal values. Why? Because I was reminded of them. Can you believe I actually forgot what they are? I don’t even know how that happened but it did and no wonder I couldn’t understand why I was feeling melancholy. It’s all too easy nowadays to allow our busy lives and other people’s opinions to get us in a headlock so if you are feeling sombre or slightly gloomy, maybe try revisiting your values to see if you’re on or off track with your desires.
Following reflection and contemplation, my values have been under construction and are now back in business helping to direct me to the life I desire and I don’t mind sharing them with you: freedom, strength and living my best life.
The Oxford Dictionary definition of freedom is ‘the power to act, speak, or think as one wants.’ The freedom to be ourselves is paramount to our happiness.
Like you, I have many goals and dreams and I am hell-bent on achieving them. Having the freedom to be able to execute and accomplish what I want to, is vital to the way I live my life. Feeling stuck, confined or restricted just doesn’t work for me and the longer those feelings stay around the greater the likelihood of internally combusting is!
It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but noone can walk it for you
I’m not talking Hulk Hogan here but in the sense of having strong emotional strength. Having the confidence to make the right decisions for me, to not be railroaded into something because it is right for others. It’s almost like having a fire in my tummy, one which is a strong desire for living my life on my own terms. And remember, it’s okay to do so.
LIVING MY BEST LIFE
I think this is my favourite and most important personal value. We all have to go to work, we like to spend time with our loved ones, go to the gym, enjoy our hobbies, the list continues. But how we do all those things is what is key.
I appreciate life-changing experiences. I started a new job last week which means personal growth, challenging myself and adding value. Life is full of opportunities and it’s up to us to make the most of them.
The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams
You see, we all have only one shot at this, life is no dress rehearsal and I want to be able to one day say hell yes, you did it! Don’t you?
Have you ever thought about your values? Check out this list if you need a bit of help.
